Our journey with Masterfix began with two foundational steps: a materiality assessment and a calculation of its 2022 carbon footprint. These initiatives laid the groundwork for a solid environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. One that would allow Masterfix to prioritise sustainability goals, track progress, and better position itself to win and retain business.
Already proactive in its sustainability efforts, Masterfix had previously calculated its 2021 carbon footprint and had implemented several office-based initiatives. These included forming an environmental champions group focused on recycling and procuring sustainable office supplies. However, it wanted to enhance its reporting with detailed scope 3 data to create a more comprehensive footprint for 2022.
Materiality assessment and stakeholder engagement
The materiality assessment resulted in ten priority areas aligned with ESG considerations specific to the property maintenance sector. We then engaged stakeholders with in-depth interviews and a survey sent to 400 internal and external participants. The subsequent insights enabled Grain to visualise and prioritise Masterfix’s strategic focus areas.
Carbon footprint calculation and scope 3 emissions expansion
Our carbon footprint work gathered data for scopes 1 and 2 and selected scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 typically represents the bulk of an organisation’s carbon emissions. However, for Masterfix, its mobile fleet’s fuel consumption was the most significant contributor. The business has already addressed this by transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), prioritising this initiative in its environmental strategy.
Strategic sustainability planning
As Grain developed a comprehensive sustainability strategy for Masterfix, we undertook a gap analysis and assessed sustainability performance. In parallel, we explored alignment with frameworks such as B Corp and SBTi to provide structure and set clear targets. This approach allows Masterfix to make continuous improvements while ensuring sustainability is deeply embedded in its operations.
Collaborating with the passionate team at Masterfix, including Matt, Chris, and Sarah, has been a pleasure. Their commitment to continually improving their sustainability efforts has been truly inspiring. We look forward to continuing this partnership, supporting Masterfix with a more sustainable way of working within the property maintenance industry.
